This month we’re celebrating 10 years of UX meetups in Central Florida! Join us as we take a look back at what we’ve accomplished since our first event in October …of 2014. The topic of that meetup was to, “Design a UX meetup.” Ten years later, we may reminisce a bit, but we’re mostly excited to look forward and explore with you how this group can continue fostering professional growth and relationships within our community. We’ll spend some time in small groups, so think about what you might want to see from the next ten years of DOUX, or maybe even what you’re going to teach us next. This meetup wouldn’t be what it is without every person who has participated, so thank you for joining us.[+] Show More
Workshop: Designing for the Future: AI User Experience Design

It seems like almost every tool has added AI features. Many early attempts simply copied the popular chat format, leaning on the ability of LLMs to take in textual content …and predict future content. But as the models are becoming increasingly multimodal and capable, there is an opportunity for a variety of new types of interfaces that keep the user in control while offering surprising capabilities.
John T. Murray, Associate Professor of Games and Interactive Media at UCF will break down several trends of UX that anticipate and incorporate the current capabilities of generative AI models, and where these might change how users interact with software in the future. He’ll demonstrate a new VR immersive authoring tool he is developing. Following a brief presentation, there will be a hands-on workshop where participants will redesign an existing interface to incorporate AI in different ways: as an agent, using mixed initiative principles and capitalizing on shared context and generating interfaces elements.
About our Speaker
Murray was co-founder and CEO of an early head-mounted display startup called Seebright, and is coauthor of two books, one of which, Flash: Building the Interactive Web (MIT Press, 2014), investigated the early media platform which empowered a generation of artists and creators to build interactive experiences and distribute them through the internet.[+] Show More

This month we’re jumping back into practical applications with a workshop on usability testing. While there is a lot of work that goes into planning, scheduling, facilitating, and synthesizing findings …from user research, this workshop is going to focus on facilitating the usability test session.
After a brief primer on running the session, we will break into groups where everyone will have a chance to facilitate a short usability test. Facilitating user research is a skill that requires experience to build, so hopefully this will be a great opportunity for us all to work on this skill.
This workshop is open to all experience levels, so if you’ve never facilitated a usability test before, or you’ve done thousands, you’re welcome.
Things to bring
A laptop (preferred) or cell phone to use as a usability test participant
A notebook to take a few notes when you’re in the notetaker role
Yourself – please arrive on time as this workshop will be a bit longer than our usual events
Remote attendees
If you are joining online, please be prepared to share your screen with a small breakout zoom room in order to participate in the usability test part of this workshop.[+] Show More

This month we welcomed the return of a December DOUX tradition—Presentation Karaoke.
Compelling storytelling and improvisation are essential skills for UX Designers. For the 5th year, and for the first time …as a hybrid event, we are encouraging everyone to practice these abilities with a game called Presentation (or PowerPoint) Karaoke.
The idea is to pick a UX related topic that you’re passionate about and give a short presentation on it – with 5 slides you’ve never seen before. Sounds easy, right?!
Regardless of whether you’re excited to get up and give an impromptu presentation, or just want to enjoy the show, we look forward to seeing you there for this event![+] Show More

Augmented and Virtual Reality are not new concepts, but their popularity and utility have skyrocketed over the past couple of years, and the momentum isn’t slowing down. We’re already witnessing …them revolutionize major industries—ranging from manufacturing and education to automotive and gaming. As the technology evolves, the demand for intuitive, engaging, and transformative user experiences is catapulting to new levels.
In this session, join Jake Nachlas, UX Designer at The Home Depot, where we’ll talk about some key questions: What does the current landscape of AR and VR look like? Where is this exciting technology leading us, and what will the future look like? Where do AR and VR make sense for a user’s journey, and where do they not? Most importantly, how can we, as UX Designers, help shape the way users interact with augmented and virtual environments? These questions aren’t just about keeping up with tech trends—they’re about defining how people will interact with this new form of computers.[+] Show More
Rapid Prototyping with Accessibility in Mind from Day-1

Most organizations wait until after the solution is implemented to evaluate design with assistive technology users. Accessibility, in this case, is about remediating mistakes made earlier in the process.
By bringing …accessibility early in the design/development process, you can enable product designers and researchers to include all users from Day 1. In this session, you’ll learn the tools and best practices for accessible rapid prototyping and running usability studies with users who rely on assistive technologies early in the design process.
About the speakers:
Marcelo Paiva is a South Florida accessibility community leader who hosts monthly meetups and frequently speaks at conferences worldwide. Marcelo is a leading evangelist at building and deploying accessible design systems, and he works as an Inclusive Design and Accessibility Architect for AEM Corp, creating accessible solutions to improve the educational system in the US for children with disabilities.
Diego Baca is a design leader with a keen interest around strategy and innovation. Most recently, he has led efforts to help evolve the design process at UKG by acting as an accessibility ambassador – this has led him down a path of learning and building awareness for others.
